Blog Post #6

What do you learn with these conversations with Anthony Capps?
Project Based Learning
Authentic audience, student interest, and content driven In your project based learning, you have to have an authentic audience for your students to present these projects to, such as other students and faculty. Blogs are a great way for students to present their projects. Student interest is a major factor in project based learning. Your students need to be interested in the subject that they are doing projects about. Also, your projects need to be correctly content driven. Students need that extra benefit in to learning about the content of their projects and be driven to succeed.

As Mr. Capps says in the second video, some parents can be against the content of the project. Although you would have to respect the wishes of your students' parents, most parents love the project based learning. The students are very involved in these projects and are very successful in the learning of the content. Faculty, principles, and administrators.

iCurio is an internet based search engine that is filtered to search through content approved for students. iCurio has features for students and teachers to organize the content that they have found online through folders. It gathers their information and research and organizes it for them. It collects their material and stores it, so that they can go back and look for it at a later time. In a classroom, it is perfect for students to get right back to where they were in their searches after a lunch break, recess, or a different classroom interuption.

Mr. Capps' list was very helpful. When he describes that your willing to learn how to teach with research on your "free time". Let your work become a fun experience. We have to be open minded! Creativity is growing in every kind of way, so we as teachers, have to be open to new ideas and methods. Make the content that you're teaching interesting for your students, also known as making your lessons content driven. As Dr. Strange says, SHARE! Share your projects, ideas, thoughts.

To teach or not to teach with technology? I feel very strong about using technology with teaching. Since I have become a college student at the University of South Alabama, I have used more technology than ever, in all my classes, not just EDM310. I believe it is very beneficial to myself, and to my future students as well. Technology is making every student become involved in the lessons and project based learning is booming.

C4KSummary for September

My student is Iron, a 7 year old girl whom is a student at Pt England School in Auckland, NZ. She is in Class 2 and her teacher is Mrs Lagitupu. She loves learning with her netbook, she says it makes learning fun. She is interested in sports. And, her favorite subject in school is Math.
The first post that I commented on of hers let me know about her choreographed dance that she put together with other classmates to Nicki Minaj's song, Super Bass. She seems like a very lively girl and is very interested in music.

My second student was Monae.
Her most recent most was on bullying. She hates bullying. She thinks some students think she is a bully, but she says she is not! I commented on her post about bullying and told her I was so happy that she isn't a bully. I also explained to her to think of ways to get her classmates to jump on the band wagon to end bullying.

My third student was Tyler.
Tyler did not describe himself on his blog. His most recent post though, was about what change would he make to his school. He chose that he would change the food. In his opinion, it does not taste good. He believes the food portions should be larger for older students. His example was that their serving now, for all students, is 3-4 chicken nuggets, and Tyler believes it should be more like 6 chicken nuggets for older students. He also thinks that students should have more options of food to choose from. Instead of it being just chicken nuggets, have hot dogs and tacos as an option as well.

Blog Post #5 post #1 Summary of progress

I started my Personal Learning Network on Symbaloo. I like the "dashboard" feel. I have all my favorite website links right in front of me and just a click away. I also have the Google search engine bar, so I can "Google" any time I want. I am learning to add some customized things to my Symbaloo, such as my Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest accounts. As well as my gmail, email, and youtube accounts.

What do we need to know about asking questions to be an effective teacher?

I did not think about how to ask a question as a teacher or even that it would make me a more effective teacher. Reading and watching the suggested videos shows a great example as to how and why. In the article, "The Right Way to ask Questions in the Classroom", Johnson explains how most teachers I had growing up asked, "Does everybody understand?". In my classes, even though students probably felt differently, we all just answered yes, and honestly I felt like I could not ask a question. The article also displays the roles of students. The smarter students always seemed to answer the "Does every one understand?" with a yes, giving the students who did not fully understand no time to ask. I want to use different strategies to help all of my students are involved in the lesson and the confidence that ALL of my students understand.

The article, "Ask Questions to Improve Learning" displayed several views and suggestions on how to improve learning by simply asking a question. As a teacher, the superiority, it's difficult to get caught up in that. In this article, it was suggested to not interrupt the student when they are answering a question. Give them time to answer, even if you think you know what they are going to say, or if you could finish their sentence. Letting the students have time to answer will build up their self esteem in a positive way.

C4T Post Summary

In Mrs. Luca's first post that I commented on, she covered the dress code regulations and how her students made it interesting to others in the first blog post that I commented on. She shared a video of her students singing a parody to Iggy's "Fancy". This video, I am quite sure, appealed to many of her students and made them aware of their school's dress code regulations. She also talked about her upcoming trip to Europe and how she was worried about a volcano errupting, which would cancel all travel to and from Europe.

In the second post I commented on of Mrs. Luca's, she was telling us the story of her dreadful trips to come after the day of exploring the different countries with no comfortable walking shoes. She was expressing her pain with the words in her post and describing, in detail, what was wrong. She was hopeful though that in the coming days she would find a great walking shoe and be able to enjoy the rest of her trip. She told us how, with her mistakes, left her walking shoes at home. She explained that she did try to find some good walking shoes that were compared to a popular shoe in the United States, but again was not a comfortable knock off brand.

Project #15

The eight different search engines project

1. WolframAlpha
I found WolframAlpha search engine to be very useful for a student. It had all different searches and results for math problems, science questions, and the everyday questions as well. In my opinion, it would be most useful for a student. http://www.wolframalpha.com/

2. DuckDuckGo
DuckDuckGo search engine does not follow you! Smarter search, less clutter, more privacy is it's slogan. Does not collect perssonal data. It is most useful, I believe, for the computer users that do not want their location to be known. https://duckduckgo.com/

3. Dogpile
The Dogpile search engine is quite similar to all the basic search engines. You can get your local news, worldwide news, and search for images. Dogpile has an app available on Apple and Android. http://www.dogpile.com/

3. Bing
Bing is powered by Microsoft, for all the anti-Apple users. You can preform keyword searches in case you do not have all the information. http://www.bing.com/

4. Ask
Why would you use Ask you say? Ask is a question answering search engine. Most useful for people with questions they want to ask. It has a malware software that cannnot be deleted once downloaded. http://www.ask.com/

5. MyWebSearch
MyWebSearch is powered by Google. It has quick links to all your favorite websites. It is mostly used as a toolbar, and is free to download and free to use. And, you can set options to get personalized news, sports, and weather updates. http://home.mywebsearch.com/index.jhtml

6. Yahoo Search
Yahoo Search provides its users with multiple ways to refine your searches. Also, has an advanced search option. Most useful, I would say, for the Yahoo web and email user. http://search.yahoo.com/

7. AOL Search
AOL Search has a lot more categorized options for searching. Has a "more" option and it individualizes searches with a different search bar for each. Most useful for AOL email users. http://search.aol.com/aol/webhome

8. Wow
Wow search engine is in the top 6 search engines, with 100,000,000 users. Wow offers an unlimited service for $17.95 a month. Personally, I do not see how this would be a want to anyone. Why pay for a search engine? http://www.wow.com/

How Can You Provide Meaningful Feedback to Your Peers?

Compliment, Suggestion, and Correction are three very important steps in a peer review. Peer review is a writing feedback to your peers, who are students your own age. It is very important to keep a positive attitude in writing a peer review and in how you interpretate your feedback as well. Like in Writing a Peer Review Top 10 Mistakes video, you do not want to be a negative Nancy, picky Patty, or a whatever William, instead take the suggestions and corrections as a benefit to your learning. Being able to take criticism well is one major quality that yourself, as a student, should posses.

Peer Edit With Perfection Tutorial was a great slideshow presentation to describe, in detail, how to give a perfect peer review. It is very important when giving a peer review to stay positive. Do not put people down or use condescending words. Being negative in situations like these, would only cause the student to not care and even give up on writing and the learning process to better their writing. It is very important to word your peer reviews in ways that are constructive and positive. Keep in mind how you feel when someone reviews your work, and how you interpret in your mind how their words sound.
